Better Learner Course Info

Though there's still some math sprinkled here and there, the Better Learner course is more about learning, how it happens, and the factors that affect its efficacy. The course is designed to shape students into better learners (of math and any other subject), introducing skills and concepts that will be helpful throughout students' academic careers. Classes will be taught remotely, but each will be capped at eight students to ensure a more personalized, engaging, and meaningful experience. I recognize that this year has presented challenges that extend beyond academics, and am here for my students as a teacher, but also a mentor.

Students will practice effective, research-backed metacognitive strategies that they can apply in any future high school or college course, including effective reading practices, the study cycle, and exam prep. We will also discuss the effects of perfectionism, imposter syndrome, stress, sleep, mindfulness, self-compassion, and the like - in addition to ways we can mitigate the negative effects and augment the positive. In the process, students will develop confidence and a sense of empowerment that naturally comes with mastery, but also because we will explicitly cultivate it; the course also explores growth mindset, motivation, identity, and self-talk as important components in the learning process.

Course Objectives

Students will develop:

 - an understanding of the learning process and ways to improve their own learning

 - a growth-oriented mindset that serves them in any class and in the face of any obstacle

 - an appreciation of their own valuable skills, abilities, and selves
